The conference begins on Monday, April 8th, with four sessions of three refereed papers each and two special sessions geared towards teaching economics at the undergrad and the high school level. The annual SES Policy Forum is to follow. The topic for 2013 will be “Higher Education Financing, Demographics, and Student Mobility”.
Monday night is the first social highlight of the conference. After a Civic Reception hosted by Elizabeth Grant, Provost of Perth and Kinross Council, the Society will sit down to the formal Sir Alec Cairncross Memorial Dinner, which includes the award ceremony for the Cairncross Prize for best paper submitted by a PhD student or young lecturer. Prof. Anton Muscatelli, Principal of the University of Glasgow, will deliver the after-dinner speech and award the prize. The evening concludes with chitchat on Economics and other things, accompanied by piano music at the Mercure Bar.
Tuesday will be devoted to the presentation of new research in 15 sessions carrying three papers each.
The Society will hold its Annual General Meeting (all resident delegates become members for a year) in the early afternoon and then depart on its annual excursion, which will lead us to Blair Castle, a wine reception, castle tour, and subsequent Annual Conference Dinner. SES President’s Guest of Honour will be Dr. John Hulbert, who as Provost of Perth and Kinross did much to welcome our learned society in the City of Perth. Upon our return, the traditional SES Shindig event will commence at the Mercure Perth Hotel.
On the Wednesday, there will be nine sessions of three refereed papers each and further sessions especially designed for PhD students and young lecturers, including a seminar on Econometrics tips & techniques as well as a talk on How to Get Your Article Published by representatives of the publishers of the Scottish Journal of Political Economy, Wiley Blackwell.
Wednesday also includes the President’s Lecture as the main event. We are happy to announce that next year’s lecture will be held by Prof. Marcel Gérard of the Université catholique de Louvain on the topic of “Higher Education in a Multijurisdictional Area”.
Delegates who come from abroad will be happy to know that we extended our “late bird” programme to provide a final great night in Scotland.
